Abies firma is a conical, evergreen tree. This conifer is heat tolerant and can grow in the South, with its USDA Zones ranging from 6 - 9. Although growing to over 120 feet tall in its native Japan, Abies firma typically grows considerably shorter in cultivation. It can be grown in full sun to part shade, but afternoon shade is typically recommended for areas with hot summers. At Brookgreen Gardens, our specimens are grown in part shade. A consistently moist, well drained, and partially acidic soil is recommended, but it is tolerant of clay soils.

The green foliage on A. firma are known as needles. The sharp quality at the apex, or tip, of the needles is a helpful identifying feature.
